Overtime, even the most durable rugs show signs of aging. Obviously this is like rug pads. When it comes down to it, the rug pad that is used is just as important as what you see on the surface. A rug pad can serve the same purpose for your rug.
Rug pads provide extra cushioning. A rug pad helps significantly – if you have an open cell pad, it will trap the dirt and hold it away from the rug. But has little, or nothing, to do with area rug pads usually. After all, once your rug is in place there is no possible way to determine with 100 percent accuracy as to if the right pad was used.
It’s much easier to pull up an area rug and rug pad to clean up spills than wall-to-wall. A rug pad helps your rug “stick” to the floor, keeping it in place, and making it safer for everyone. This is similar to Oriental rug pads frequently. In addition to the durability that a rug pad will add, you should also consider that it will make the job look better as well.
This is an extra bonus for those of us that are especially sensitive to these types of bacteria and it’s nice to know that the rug pads in our home prevent bacteria even if we aren’t especially sensitive. There are even special types of open cell rug pads for use over floors that have radiant heating to allow heat to freely flow up through the pad and rug. Again, the pad is used as a buffer between the rug itself and the floor that is underneath.
Rug pads reduce slippage. You don’t want the rug pad to show, so it should be cut to be at least 1/2″ smaller all the way around. The pad that you use under your rug is very important. Rug pads come in all shapes and sizes and most can be sized with a pair of household scissors.
